Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Thursday, January 4th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. New Jersey officials say the shooting that killed New York Imam Hassan Sharif yesterday morning outside the Masjad Mohammed Mos, does not appear to be motivated by bias. The crime happened early yesterday as the Imam was preparing for morning prayers. New Jersey Attorney General Matt Plotkin says the incident is indicative of the gun violence epidemic in America. While we are not yet at liberty to discuss the progress of our ongoing investigative efforts,
Starting point is 00:00:44 the evidence collected thus far does not indicate that this was an act motivated by bias or an act of nest terror. Acting Essex County prosecutor, Theodore Stevens said Sharif was shot more than once. No arrest has been reported. City and state officials say teens in New York City's overcrowded juvenile detention centers could be sleeping in common areas like classrooms for at least the next three months. WNIC's Jesse Edwards reports. Young people detained in juvenile detention centers are meant to get their own bedrooms to make sure they're safe while sleeping.
Starting point is 00:01:18 But in October, the state agreed to let the city temporarily bypass that rule and house some teens together in common spaces. Now the waiver has been extended through April. Under the waiver, teens have been sleeping in groups on plastic pallets in shared spaces like classrooms. A city spokesperson says there's been three altercations in the group housing areas so far. Lawyers representing the teens say the practice puts their clients at risk. The city maintains staff are doing everything they can to keep kids safe. Police are looking for a moped riding duo,
Starting point is 00:01:52 wanted for robbing victims throughout Manhattan last month. The NYPD says the pair robbed or tried to rob at least five people, mostly women, on two evenings last month. In each case, police say two individuals riding a dark-colored moped, approach the victims, and stole their purse, bags, or wallets. Higher prices begin a day for a city bike, unlock fees for single rides jumped by 30 cents, the same for pedal bikes and electric bikes. Annual memberships jumped by $15 to $220, start. Starting January 29th, City Bike says the price hikes will help fund station upgrades and new e-bikes. 40 and overcast right now, a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 8 o'clock this morning.
