Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, July 10th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. 72 of clouds, chance of rain and thunderstorms. It'll turn sunny in 83. Flash flooding has destroyed roads and homes throughout the Hudson Valley and killed at least one person. The deadly overnight storms dropped more than a half a foot of rain on parts of the state.
Starting point is 00:00:32 and caused massive damage. Orange County Executive Steve Newhouse warned residents against traveling last night. If you do not need to be on the road, stay off the road. We have a number of emergencies that we need to respond to, and those folks need help, and we need all the other people off the road. Governor Kathy Hockel says 1,300 homes in Orange County are without power as of 9.30 last night. She told WCBS several people are missing after the storm, at least one home was washed away.
Starting point is 00:01:04 City Hall is changing the transportation plan for migrants arriving to New York City. WNYC's Tiffany Hanson explains. Migrants who arrive at the Port Authority bus terminal are no longer being met with free buses. Earlier this month, members of the National Guard at the Port Authority started distributing flyers to migrants with directions to the Roosevelt Hotel on East 45th Street. The city has run a checkpoint at the Hotel for New York. rivals since May. Over the weekend, mayoral spokesperson Kate Smart said that instead of taking migrants from the Port Authority to the Roosevelt, the agency's buses will now take migrants from the hotel
Starting point is 00:01:43 to their final shelter placements. The change is angering advocates who say it forces families with children to navigate a city they've never been to before. Mayor Eric Adams' administration continues to grapple with the migrant crisis that has pushed the city's shelter population to well over 100,000. And Major League Baseball's home run derby takes place tonight at 8, and only one player made the cut to represent our area. Met Slugger Pete Alonzo has 26 home runs. He's favored to win this year after winning in 2019 and 2021. He'll go up against Seattle Mariners, Julio Rodriguez, in the first round, who was clocked in 13 home runs. He came in second last year. Both the Derby and tomorrow's All-Star game are in Seattle. 72 in cloudy right now patchy fog this morning, chances of morning and midday rain and thunderstorms that could produce some heavy rainfall turning sunny and 83.
