Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Thursday, July 11th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Homeless New Yorkers are spending fewer days on average in city-run shelters this year compared to years past.
WNMIC's Karen Yee analyzed the data.
The number of days, families with children and adult families resided in a Department of
homeless services shelter has reached a 10-year low.
Stays for single adults are down too.
That's largely because an influx of migrants entered the shelter system
and are often leaving more quickly, moving on to other cities or finding other housing arrangements.
City officials say they've also increased efforts to get shelter residents into permanent housing.
But despite the shorter stays, families with kids are still remaining in shelter for about a year,
and adult families are staying for more than 500 days.
Homeless advocates say the city can do more to expand housing vouchers for low-income residents
and create resettlement plans for new migrants.
A New Jersey judge says enough, and it's ordering one of the state's richest towns
to end a years-long fight against building affordable housing.
WNYC's Mike Hayes has more.
Judge Cynthia Santamoro says Milburn Township must move forward with a 100% affordable
75-unit development in the heart of its downtown.
The township previously defied multiple court orders to build the housing, which would be just a block
from Milburn's shops and NJ Transit Station.
Milburn, which has a median household income of more than $250,000, has built almost no affordable
housing in the last 40 years.
But township officials say they don't want to cluster so many units together, and that they've
found better locations.
The judge says, those could be fabulous sites for future affordable housing.
housing. New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado was calling on President Biden to suspend his
reelection campaign. His boss, Governor Hokel, has been a prominent Biden surrogate and vocally
supports the president's candidacy. Yesterday, the governor said she believes Biden would stay in the race
and would win. The governor's remarks came in response to Congress member Pat Ryan, a Democrat
who represents parts of the Hudson Valley and is running a tight re-election race of his own.
