Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Friday, July 21st.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
National Weather Service is warning that a strong thunderstorm will impact parts of
Eastern Passaic, Bergen, Northwestern Essex, South Southern Westchester,
and Rockland County through 615 this morning with winds topping 40 miles an hour.
That's another 11 minutes or so.
The Biden administration wants to keep detaining immigrants at a notorious jail in Elizabeth, New Jersey,
despite a state ban. WNYC's Medcats explains.
In 2021, New Jersey lawmakers responded to concerns about federal immigration policies and dangerous local jail conditions
by banning detention centers from opening or renewing contracts with immigration and customs enforcement.
Three detention centers at county jails then closed.
But the company that runs the last remaining detention center in the state,
the state, Corsevic, sued Governor Phil Murphy over the law. Now, the federal government is
siding with Corpic, telling the court that the state is infringing on its right to jail immigrants.
Advocates who push for the law say conditions in the windowless former warehouse and Elizabeth
are inhumane, and the U.S. should not enrich companies by jailing asylum seekers and those with
immigration violations. Mayor Eric Adams in New York and the NYPD Commissioner, Edward Caban,
met with Israeli president Issaq Herzog at police headquarters yesterday.
Adam spoke briefly to reporters after the meeting where he called New York the Tel Aviv of America.
We're not silent partners. We fight together against terrorism against assault.
And we're going to continue to lift each other up. And so it was good to have the president here.
Isaac Herzog, the Israeli president, did not speak.
took only one question about why the meeting took place at police headquarters.
The mayor and former police officer answered with, quote,
once a cop, always a cop.
75 with thunderstorms now.
Today, those storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall and flash flooding,
a high near 81.
Thanks for listening.
