Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, July 22nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. As you've been hearing, President Biden's decision to drop his re-election bid upends the presidential race. But as WNIC's John Campbell reports, it also threatens to reshape some key New York congressional races. Public polling shows Biden is deeply unpleasing. popular in New York City's suburbs. That includes places like the Hudson Valley and Long Island,
Starting point is 00:00:36 where a handful of battleground congressional races could determine which party wins control of the House. State Democratic chair Jay Jacobs says he believes Biden's exit is a positive. I think it helps because I think it will reinvigorate the entire party and the entire nation. A Sienna College poll last month showed Biden leading former President Donald Trump by just eight points in New York. That's a small margin in a deep blue state where Democrats outnumber Republicans two to one. John Campbell will join us later this hour. The outgoing head of the FDNY says she's open to taking another job in the city government after leaving her current role. Commissioner Laura Kavanaugh has said she intends to resign after Mayor Adams finds a new
Starting point is 00:01:18 commissioner for the country's largest fire department. Kavanaugh told Pix 11 news yesterday that while she was partly leaving for a family reason, she would consider finding other ways to serve in the Adams administration. So I've told him I'm open to it. I'm so appreciative. I've worked for a lot of people, and he's one of my best bosses. I certainly, if I think I can do it, I would. I also love city service, but I have to say, I don't know if that works with the family piece, and that's really what I have to consider. That's the thing that will make my decision. Kevin, I was the first woman to ever lead the FDNY, whose history dates back to 1865.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Riders are livid after Amtrak and NJ Transit experience yet another setback. This time, the agencies blamed downed wiring for extensive delays and cancellations in and out of New York City throughout the day yesterday. Manhattan resident Quinn Trong says she had to band together with three other strap hangers to call a $320 ride share car. It is very frustrating. They need to do some kind of compensation because I don't know. I paid for a trip to go to New York City and they dropped me off in Trent to New Jersey. Train woes had plagued New York City commuters since relentless heat waves contributed to infrastructure problems beginning last month. Service was eventually restored last night.
