Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, July 24th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Property owners in New York City can now register the buildings to block illegal short-term rentals on Airbnb and other websites. And as WNIC's David Brand reports, they're adding thousands of properties to the list. Call it the anti-airbnB database. New York City is asking property owners who already ban short-term rentals and tenant leases
Starting point is 00:00:38 to register on a prohibited buildings list. It's part of a new law to eliminate illegal short-term rentals in the city. So far, 8,700 buildings have been added. Most are in Manhattan. The city will share the list with Airbnb, Verbo, and other platforms to block payments for units in those buildings. Officials say they'll start cracking down on illegal listings in September. To find out if your building is on that list, we've made a map. Just head over to gothamist.com. A former Columbia University gynecologist could spend the rest of his life in prison when he learns his punishment today for abusing patients.
Starting point is 00:01:16 In January, Robert Haddon was convicted of sexually abusing four women during medical examinations. The ex-O-B-GYN is alleged to have abused hundreds of women since the 1980s. Evelyn Yang, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, is among those who says Haddon sexually abused them. Federal prosecutors are seeking a sentence of at least 25 years in prison. They have called Haddon a predator in a white coat. Just three months after a faculty strike, Rutgers University leadership is embroiled in a heated dispute over the planned merger of New Jersey's two largest public medical schools. Earlier this month, the Ruckers Board voting unanimously to merge New Jersey Medical School in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. On Friday, that prompted the Rucker's Center, which only serves as an advisor, to make a vote of no confidence in Ruckers President Jonathan Holloway.
Starting point is 00:02:13 North Jersey.com reports faculty are concerned the merge will reduce residency opportunities for medical students. In April, Ruckles Ruckers faculty walked out in the dispute over job security and other issues. issues.
