Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Wednesday, July 24th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Some residents of Brooklyn's Clinton Hill are calling on city officials to downsize a set of migrant mega shelters in the neighborhood after two deadly shootings near the sites. The Democratic liaison for the local assembly district, Renee Colleen, More organized a rally last night. We've done everything that we can do to help the migrants.
Starting point is 00:00:37 We've given them food. We've given them clothes. We've given them money. But how much more can we do? This is not on us. This is on local government. This is on government to take care of the migrants. The two shelters are in a two-block radius and house nearly 4,000 people.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Mayor Adams has so far rejected calls to move the shelter. He says the city's out of shelter space. More than 200 NYPD officers in Washington, D.C. this week, helping federal police monitor protests as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the Capitol. But two top NYPD officials made a pit stop along the way. W&MIC's Bahar Oostodon has more. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Shell and Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Kaz Dautry, say they helped arrest someone suspected of stealing a car. Not in Brooklyn, not in the Bronx, but in a Ross dress-for-less parking lot in Washington, D.C.
Starting point is 00:01:35 When we asked D.C. police and the NYPD why two of the NYPD's top officials got involved, they said, Shell and Dottry were on their way to the U.S. Capitol when they noticed someone fleeing D.C. So they jumped out to help. Major changes are coming of parts of Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue, where several pedestrians have died in recent years. W.N.M.C. Julia Hayward has more. elected officials and advocates have been calling for changes to a dangerous stretch of Atlantic Avenue for years. Now, the city transportation department says it will be revamping the western stretch of Atlantic Avenue, running through Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill. The changes include upgraded traffic signals, along with more crosswalks and signage.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The DOT says, a similar project on Atlantic Avenue's eastern stretch reduced pedestrian injuries by 30,9. and resulted in a 14% decline in cyclist injuries. 74 were clouds, showers, mist, and fog, afternoon showers, and thunderstorms likely, mostly cloudy today in 82.
