Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Wednesday, July 26. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. A new pilot launching this fall aims to replace gas stoves in NITHA apartments with energy-efficient induction stoves. WNYC's Catalina Gonella has more. The program will take the form of a competition with NACHA-Challeng companies to create electric stoves that won't require costly electrical building upgrades.
Starting point is 00:00:36 The first 100 households would receive the induction stoves as part of a testing phase. Then NYCHA plans on buying $10,000 through the contest, known as the Induction Stove Challenge. Nightja's ultimate goal would be to replace the gas stoves in all 177,000 NICHA apartments. New York City has America's greatest heat islands, and by great we mean the worst. And an analysis of 44 cities, the research nonprofit Climate Central ranked the Big Apple number one for the potential to trap heat on summer days. The city's thousands of miles of asphalt can make temperatures at least 8 degrees hotter for roughly 80% of people who live here. Climate Central researcher Jen Brady says many urban heat islands exist in poorer communities. That's where we see the communities that not only is it hotter, but there's no way.
Starting point is 00:01:29 escape from it. You can't just go to the park at the end of the street because the park at the end of the street doesn't exist. Sections of the Bronx and Midtown Manhattan are among the hottest areas. The spots are characterized by having little or no green space. Brady says mapping out urban heat islands can help deploy resources where they need it the most. A federal judge has sentenced demand to two and a half years in prison and one year in inpatient drug treatment and the overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams. Carlos Manchi. pleaded guilty to federal drug conspiracy. His attorney asked for leniency. He says his client is in his 70s, illiterate and addicted to drugs himself. Prosecutors say Williams overdosed on heroin
Starting point is 00:02:11 laced with fentanyl that he bought on the street in Williamsburg in 2021. Four men have pleaded guilty in the case, Machi is the first to face sentencing. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation says the air quality this morning. So far is moderate due to particle pollution. There is, however, an air quality alert for later today when elevated pollution levels are expected to make the air unhealthy for children, teens, and older adults as well as those with heart or lung issues, such as asthma. 69 and mostly sunny right now.
