Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Wednesday, July 5th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
73 with clouds out there this morning, sunshine on the way and a high of 90 today.
The MTA says it's still unclear how much drivers will pay for entering Manhattan south of 60th Street.
But as WNYC Stephen Nesson reports, the MTA does know how.
it plans to spend the money.
The money will go to a lot of what's called state of good repair work, things like new signals
on most of the lettered lines, electric buses, and making more stations accessible with ramps and
elevators.
The New York law that allows the MTA to launch congestion pricing requires the agency to charge
enough to make $1 billion a year.
The transit agency will use that steady stream of income to borrow $15 billion.
The money will also be used to help fund megaprojects, like the next phase of the
2 Avenue subway, and Penn Access, that is, bringing Metro North trains to Penn Station.
EMTA plans to launch the tolls as early as next May.
Starting today, employers in New York City must tell job applicants if artificial intelligence is
used in hiring and how they're using it. The automated employment decision tools law
enacted in 2021 will also require employers to conduct regular audits to determine if the use of AI is
resulting in bias. Some job recruiters use AI to screen applicants, and in some cases, bots are
conducting early stage interviews. This New York City law is the first of its kind in the country.
Employers who don't comply with it could face a civil penalty. Basketball star, Brittany Greiner's back
in New York City today. Griner became the subject of international headlines after Russia
accused her of drug smuggling and detained her while playing overseas. It released her this year in a
Prisoner Swap, she's back with her WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury. Her incarceration sparked global
discussions about pay and travel when it comes to American women's sports as well as race and gender
presentation. Tonight at 7, she and the Mercury play in Brooklyn against the New York Liberty,
a hip injury sideline grinder in another visit to Barclays. Your forecast now.
