Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Friday, July 5th. Here's the morning headlines. I'm Jene Pierre. NYPD officials say an 8-year-old boy is dead after a violent incident in Queens Thursday night that left his parents stabbed and his brother shot and injured by police. Officials say police arrived to the apartment in Jamaica to find the second older boy threatened his.
Starting point is 00:00:33 father with a knife. Police say an officer demanded he dropped the knife before shooting and injuring him. Police did not say who killed the eight-year-old boy or stabbed his two parents. Officials say an eight-month-old baby was also in the apartment during the chaos. The NYPD is investigating the incident. A new program is giving young New Yorkers at risk of becoming homeless one-time cash payments to help keep them housed. The national nonprofit Point Source Youth started the program earlier this year to help 100 people between the ages of 18 to 24. The payments can range from $600 to more than $9,000 and can be used to pay owed rent, cover moving costs, or look for a new housing unit. Organizers with the program say it's much more cost effective to help young adults pay
Starting point is 00:01:21 their overdue rent or a broker's fee for a new apartment. The city's shelter system, meanwhile, costs taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a year. It's likely, to be a hot and humid weekend with rain expected Friday evening going into Saturday morning. Those showers could come with thunderstorms. David Stark is a meteorologist with the National Weather Surface. He says the potentially wet weather doesn't mean you need to spend the entire weekend indoors. It doesn't look like a complete washout by any means during the daytime. It's just something to keep an eye on, especially if there's any outdoor planes. Hyes are expected to be in the upper 80s, and Stark says the rain should keep it from feeling too hot. Showers should subside by Sunday.
