Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Thursday, June 1st. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. New York State lawmakers are closing in on a deal to automatically seal criminal convictions after a certain period of time. WNIC's John Campbell has more. Governor Hokel and legislative leaders all say they want to pass a bill known as the Clean Slade Act before law. lawmakers end their annual session next week. They say would help people get work after they've

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins says they're nearing consensus on a key sticking point, the length of time before the automatic ceiling kicks in. I believe everybody's kind of agreed on the time. And so I do believe we're very close. The legislative session is scheduled to end June 8th. The Clean Slate Act is one of the few major bills lawmakers are expected to consider before then. New Yorkers on Medicaid soon will have to prove they still qualify for the free health insurance program after having coverage automatically renewed during the pandemic. Those who no longer meet the income limits may have to find another health plan, but a new national survey finds that many Medicaid members are unaware of the upcoming
Starting point is 00:01:25 audit. Arlene Cruz Escobar directs the health programs at Make the Road, one of the nonprofits that conducted the survey. This is going to be a new process for many individuals who during the pandemic enrolled into programs like Medicaid due to loss of income or other changes in their household. Nearly 8 million New Yorkers are on Medicaid, up from 6 million in March of 2020. State officials will review their eligibility on a rolling basis over the next year. The 29-year-old man charged with killing Sarville, New Jersey Councilmember and passed a Eunice June 4 will stay in a Virginia jail until at least the end of this month.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Authorities arrest Rashid Ali Binam in Drumford's death on Tuesday, four months after someone shot her in front of her townhouse. Binham's extradition hearing is June 29th. Prosecutors say the murdered council member knew Bynum from a previous church. Bynum has weapons and convictions in Virginia and Maryland.
