Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, June 12th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. 69 with clouds out there now, showers and thunderstorms later in a high of 77. New York Senator Chuck Schumer says the federal government needs to deploy more firefighters to help extinguish wildfires raging across Canada. That is if New York City and the region.
Starting point is 00:00:34 you want to avoid another hazardous weather event. The city and area are just coming out of days-long event where the air became unhealthy to breathe, painting the skyline in orange tinge. The Senate Majority Leader says the U.S. Forest Service should deploy 600 firefighters to help put out wildfires in Quebec. That's up from 300 already working to put out fires up north. And if they need to stay there all summer, because the possibility of more of these fires occurring this summer is very real,
Starting point is 00:01:04 They should stay there. The air quality and region remains much better than last week. The website AirNow.gov rates the air as moderate, meaning if you are unusually sensitive to particle pollution, you may want to spend less time outside or wear a mask. Actor Mark Ruffalo is joining a fight to save a historic Upper West Side Church from redevelopment. Ruffalo was one of a handful of celebrities elected and elected officials who spoke at a rally over the weekend at West Park Presbyterian Church. The cash-strapped congregation seeks to have the church's landmark designation removed so it can complete a deal with a luxury condo developer.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Ruffalo, who lives on the Upper West Side, told Fox 5 that he's asking Mayor Adams to intervene. We invite him to come and to see the building, to see it's not falling down, to see that there's this diverse group of people, artists and actors and painters and dance studios. The city plans to hold the hearing on the church. is plan tomorrow. Another horse has died after racing at Belmont Park, a day after the Belmont Stakes. Mashney Girl suffered an injury in the first race yesterday and fell near the quarter pole, forcing three other horses to change course.
Starting point is 00:02:19 According to the sports company for racing statistics, the five-year-old mayor was euthanized. She was trained by Mark Henning, whose horse excursionista suffered a catastrophic left front leg injury and a grass race Saturday, one race after the Belmont Stakes was run. That horse had to be euthanized as well. Four horses have died at Belmont Park this year.
