Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Thursday, June 22nd.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
61 and cloudy high in the mid-60s today.
Tenants and landlords are expressing frustration after the rank guidelines board voted to raise the price
for rent-stabilized tenants across New York City.
They'll go up to 3% on one-year leases and for,
Two-year leases, they'll increase 2.75% for the first year and then 3.2% of the previous years rent.
Simone Walker is part of a tenants association, and she doesn't think the board found a good middle ground.
In their minds, they believe that they're compromising and they're working with us, but they're working against us.
Landlords say the rent increases don't help them keep up with rising expenses.
There are about a million rent-stabilized units in the city.
The new rents will go into effect for leases signed after October 1st.
The NYPD has agreed to start sharing data and police records with a new watchdog team
tasked with investigating allegations of racial profiling lodged against its officers.
WNYC Samantha Max explains.
Since the Civilian Complaint Review Board launched a unit to review claims of police bias last year,
the NYPD's refusal to turn over records has made it nearly impossible for investigators to do their jobs.
As of last month, the police department had rejected all 100 records requests submitted by the team.
The new agreement lays out how the NYPD will share materials with the watchdog agency for racial profiling complaints.
But officials at the watchdog agency say the deal with police might not be enough to save the CCRB's newly formed racial profiling team.
The unit has more than a dozen open positions, and officials say the agency needs more funding to fill those jobs.
The New York Rangers' all-time winningest goalie is heading to the Hall of Fame for Hockey.
Hendrik Lundquist headlines the Hall's 2023 class and was elected during the first year of eligibility.
No surprise there.
He broke nearly every franchise gold-tending record for the Rangers over his 15-year career with the blue shirts.
He won the Vezena trophy in 2012 and led the blue shirts to the Stanley Cup finals in 2014,
where they lost, though, to the L.A. Kings.
Lundquist retired from hockey in 2021 and played every game of his career with the Rangers.
The induction ceremony takes place in November.
61 and cloudy now, 66 today with showers.
