Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Thursday, June 27th.
Here's the morning headlines from David First.
The NYPD and the Queens DA's office are investigating a claim that a group of migrants is using food delivery bags to sneak guns into city shelters.
WNYC's Samantha Max reports.
The news came to light at an arraignment Wednesday for Burr.
He's a 19-year-old accused of shooting two NYPD officers while they tried to arrest him for riding a motorcycle in the wrong direction in Queens.
Prosecutors say he told police about the smuggling ring.
Researchers have found that immigrants don't commit crimes at higher rates than the general public.
But John J. College professor Jeffrey Butts says lack of work permits could tempt new arrivals to make money through illegal means.
So that's a problem, but that's a function of our immigration policy.
That's not a characteristic of someone we call a migrant.
Kastro Mata has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.
A new report finds that a deepening housing shortage could be costing New York City roughly
$2 billion in annual tax revenue.
The Citizens Budget Commission released the report today.
They analyzed the economic impact of the city's housing crisis
and found huge losses in potential sales and income taxes.
Sean Campion is the policy group's director of housing and economic development studies.
He says housing scarcity is forcing people to leave the city and spend their money elsewhere.
Housing scarcity is bad for New Yorkers, is bad for the economy. It's bad for the city's fiscal health.
The city's most recent housing survey found just over 1% of all apartments were vacant and available to rent last year.
Campion is urging lawmakers to pass measures allowing for new development so New Yorkers can stay in the
boroughs and others can move into the city. It's another big day for soccer fans in our area.
Tonight, MetLife Stadium is hosting a Copa America match between Uruguay and Bolivia.
Earlier this week, Argentina and Chile played on the MetLife pitch with Argentina winning,
won nothing. Over 80,000 fans took in that game, and you may have seen people wearing the
light blue and white Argentina colors or Chile's red throughout the tri-state area.
MetLife will also host a Copa America semifinal matchup on July 9th.
68 degrees, mostly cloudy going up to 86 today.
