Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Wednesday, June 7th. Here's the morning headlines from Kerry Nolan. New Jersey Republican voters have picked the more moderate candidate to run in what is expected to be a one of two competitive races for the legislature in November. WNYC's Nancy Solomon reports that results from last night's primary could help the GOP flip a Democratic seat. In South Jersey, Republicans chose former Washington Township Council member Chris Del Borrello to run in the fourth legislative district. He defeated a MAGA candidate, Nick DeSilvio, and is
Starting point is 00:00:47 expected by many political observers to be the stronger candidate against the Democrats in November. In the district next door, Ed Durr, the MAGA candidate who defeated Democratic Senate President Steve Sweeney two years ago, won his primary. He'll face a well-known Democratic Democratic Assemblyman, John Berzicelli, in November. And in a North Jersey race featuring a rare Democratic primary between two veteran senators, Dick Cody defeated Nia Gill, the longest serving black woman in the legislature. New York lawmakers are eyeing April 2nd for next year's presidential primary. The date could give a boost to New York Democrats if other nearby states also move their presidential primaries to the same date. Under National Democratic Party rules, nearby states
Starting point is 00:01:34 with the same primary date are eligible for a 15% increase in the number of delegates at the Party National Convention. Connecticut and Pennsylvania are also considering the April 2nd date to hold their primaries. A federal judge has ruled that Orange and Rockland counties cannot enforce their executive orders aimed at barring asylum seekers in New York City from relocating North. Federal Judge Nelson Roman issued a preliminary injunction yesterday prohibiting the counties from enforcing their bans. He cited numerous discriminatory comments made by the county executives in both communities. The narrow order doesn't apply to proceedings in state court that also challenge Mayor Adams' plans to send hundreds of migrants to other communities. The New York
