Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Thursday, June 8th. Here's the morning headlines for Michael Hill. 57. Here comes the sun still trying to shine through that haze and smoke out there. Today, slim shower chants is 71 for a high, but again, more smoke and haze and another air quality alert day. WNYC's Health and Science Editor Ccon, Akpan, says, despite some predictions, that things would ease this morning, New York City and New Jersey are still in the very
Starting point is 00:00:39 unhealthy range. Air quality in the city remains hazardous as smoke from Canada wildfires continues to blanket this area. Governor Kathy Hochle is urging New Yorkers to stay inside during what she's calling a health and environmental crisis. You don't need to go out and run tonight. You don't need to go out and take a walk. You don't need to push the baby in the stroller. This is not a safe time to do that. I want to reiterate that. she'll say the bad air could continue through the day today, it may be into tomorrow before a cold front drops in and sweeps the smoke away. Also a reminder that Jacqueline Jeffrey Wilensky has published a localized data tracker on gotthmus.com at polls from the EPA's Air Now and the city's air monitors. The dangerous air quality in the city continues and is especially affecting outdoor workers like Amazon delivery worker,
Starting point is 00:01:30 Territ Quta. He says he was surprised at how different the skyline looked by the afternoon yesterday, but he doesn't believe wearing a mask would help much. I'm just leaving my faith in God. I ain't a lie, for me. What can you really do? And I don't feel like a mask would really do anything, for me. So I'm just leaving it up to God, honestly. Public health experts say wearing any well-fitting mask is beneficial, but N-95s and K-N-95s will offer the most protection. The poor air quality is experienced. as we said to linger through tomorrow. The city is suing 30 upstate counties plus Suffolk County for refusing to accommodate migrants.
Starting point is 00:02:09 County executives across New York have issued emergency executive orders, barring migrants from staying in hotels on the city's dime. Mayor Adams is calling for an end to what he calls xenophobic bigotry. Mayor Adams claims each of the upstate counties have taken less than 1% of tens of thousands of migrants arriving in New York City. Your forecast now, 57 with haze, air quality alert once again.
