More than half the lawsuits filed in state courts in New York City under the Adult Survivors Act come from women who say they were sexually assaulted while detained on Rikers Island.
Double-NBC Samantha Max analyzed the lawsuits and has this report.
Sexually abusive strip searches. Assaults in shower stalls, cells, and other spaces hidden from security cameras.
Correction officers trading cigarettes and gum for oral sex. These are some of the patterns that emerged from a WNYC analysis of more than 700 Rikers-related lawsuits.
The allegations span from the 1970s to as recently as last year.
City officials say the Department of Correction has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual.
assault and is working with the city's legal department to navigate all the pending cases.
The plaintiffs are collectively seeking more than $14.7 billion in damages.
A suspect is in custody this morning after police said they shot and killed a police officer
during a vehicle stop in Queens last night. Mayor Eric Adams spoke at Jamaica hospital shortly
after doctors said 31-year-old officer Jonathan Diller was dead.
It was because of a senseless act.
of violence that we witness a person had a total disregard for the safety of the city.
Officials say the three-year veteran of the force and another officer stopped two people in a car
that was illegally parked at a bus stop in Far Rockaway.
Police say a person inside the car fired at the officer hitting him in the body.
police say they are still investigating the incident.
A man was killed last night after being pushed onto subway tracks in East Harlem.
Police say it happened just after 7 at the 125th Street, Lexington Avenue Station.
They say a four train entering the station was not able to stop before it hit the man who died at the scene.
Police call the attack unprovoked.
They say they've arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with murder.
