Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Monday, March 4th. Here's the morning headlines. I'm Jene Pierre. New Jersey officials are promising more answers after at least three houses in Newark were found to have lead in their water pipes. That's despite the city's massive undertaking over the past five years to remove all of its lead service lines. Some community members say they feel left in the dark more than a month after inspections revealed the problem.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Nicole Miller is with the Newark Environmental Commission. She says she's frustrated. They could have done better by giving us a timeline for expectations so we know that, oh, by, you know, this date, if you haven't heard from us, then that's a problem, right? A spokesperson for the state's Department of Environmental Protection says it should have an update within two weeks. The speculation is increasing over Brooklyn State Senator Zellnor Mirey's political ambitions. Miery spoke at a historic church in Harlem 10 miles away from his district Sunday. WMYC's Samantha Max says that's added fuel to predictions he's gearing up to run for mayor in 2025. Abyssinian Baptist Church is where the pulpit meets politics.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Former Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was its pastor. and the church's leaders through their support behind the campaigns of Michael Bloomberg and George Pataki. WNYC has previously reported Mirey is considering a run for City Hall. He gave an impassioned speech at the church, pointing to legislation he sponsored that adds more voting protections for people of color. We are at a perilous time, and all of us have a responsibility to save our democracy. After services, Maree didn't directly address whether he'll run. for mayor. He says he's focused on his work in the Senate and will leave his political future up to God. Well, you know, Sunday's gorgeous weather couldn't last. Following Sunday's record high 68 degrees in
Starting point is 00:02:10 sun-splashed Central Park, you can expect cooler temperatures and some rain today. According to the National Weather Service, that's pretty much the outlook through Thursday, with temperatures in the mid-50s along with rain. Clear skies and temperatures in the lower 50s are expected to come on Friday. And one last nod to what was Sunday's high shattered a previous record 65 degrees set back in 1991.
