Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Wednesday, May 10th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. 52 and clear, sunny and 73 today. The head of the New York State Senate says Mayor Adams has planned to send migrants to the suburbs, shows why federal officials need to step in and help and right away. Majority leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousin, says the migrant crisis is too big for any one. one community to face on its own, whether it's New York City or Rockland and Orange counties. The federal government, frankly, has to do something to help all of our municipalities. I mean, this is not something that any individual municipality can manage on their own.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Governor Holklin lawmakers committed to sending a billion dollars to the city to help deal with the migrant crisis, but that's only designed to cover roughly a third of the city's cost. The new boss of the Patterson Police Department in New Jersey is ready to go. Five weeks after the State Attorney General's office took over the Long Trouble Department. WNYC's Elizabeth Shway has more. Newly appointed officer in charge Issa Abasi is a 26-year veteran of the NYPD, where he was charged with rebuilding community relations after the 2014 death of Eric Garner. State Attorney General Matt Plattkin took over the Patterson Police Department's day-to-day operations last month,
Starting point is 00:01:30 after years of complaints from residents about abuse and corruption. But Plotkin says transforming the department won't be a quick process. There's going to be no mission accomplished banner in the next six weeks or six months. This is going to be an operation that's measured in terms of months and years, and I think the public needs that. Abasi is holding community listening sessions across the city this month. The New Jersey Devils came up way short at home last night against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils fell six to one.
Starting point is 00:02:00 They now trail the series three games to one. They face elimination tomorrow night in game five in Raleigh, North Carolina. And it's win or go home at the Garden tonight. The New York Knicks face elimination on their home floor against the Miami Heat. If they lose, the season's over. And Miami would advance to the NBA's Eastern Conference finals. If the Knicks win, they'll cut Miami series lead to three games to two in their best of seven series.
