Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Monday, May 13th. Here's the morning headlines. I'm Jenae Pierre. Police officers shot and killed a 33-year-old man in East Flatbush early Sunday morning. The NYPD says the man had a gun in his hand and refused to put it down. Members of the nearby community say they're sick of gun violence in their neighborhood.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Reverend Terry Lee, runs a church just up the block from the shooting. I've been in this neighborhood since 1989, and we have seen so many, you know, shooting right across the aisle. We shoot the police, the police shoot, and we shooting at each other. The NYPD didn't say how many times the officers shot the man, who was later identified as Christian Emil. The department says the officers used a taser on the man
Starting point is 00:01:00 but shot him after he got up and ran with a gun in his hand. City Council Speaker Adrian Adams is hoping for a quick resolution as the city's Department of Investigation looks into claims that NYPD officials are misusing the department's official social media accounts. The speaker spoke on PICS 11 Sunday about what she would like to see. Again, that transparency is shown, that accountability for the posts that have affected not just elected officials, because it's not just the city council affected, obviously. elected officials, journalists, civilians. Top police officials like Chief of Patrol, John Schell, have used social media to criticize people, including journalists, a judge, and a city council member.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Adams demanded the city look into whether such behavior violates the law earlier this month. Tyrese Halliburton scored 20 points. T.J. McConnell added 15 and 10 assists, and the Indiana Pacers ruled to their second biggest playoff victory ever, beating the New York Knicks 121 to 89 Sunday to even the Eastern Conference semifinals series at two games apiece. The paces fell just short of their most lopsided playoff victory when they beat Cleveland by 34 points in April of 2018. Game five of the series will be played Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The NYPD's ongoing crackdown on so-called ghost cars continues to net results. In tandem with other agencies, including the MTA, police. are working to curb the number of people driving with fake or obscured license plates. According to the MTA, 19 people were arrested in just one day last week. A total of 57 cars were seized amounting to $302,000 in unpaid fees. The MTA provided a photo showing one vehicle with what appears to be a fast food bag wrapped around the license plate. Officials with the MTA said the prevalence of these ghost cars cost the city more than $100 million in lost revenue last year. Thanks for listening. This is NYC Now from WNYC.
