Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Tuesday, May 14th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Jury selection is underway for the trial of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez.
Lawyers will continue questioning prospective jurors today.
WNYC's Nancy Solomon reports.
Menendez is charged with accepting bribes in a scheme that allegedly helped
Egypt purchased weapons from the U.S. Prosecutors said the FBI found 22 gold bars, stacks of cash,
and a Mercedes convertible at the Menendez home. They said much of it traced back to three
businessmen also charged with the conspiracy. One of them has pleaded guilty. Of the first pool of
102 jurors, 38 were released for scheduling conflicts. The trial is expected to last six weeks.
The senator sat calmly through the entire day, often with his fingers tented in front of his chest.
The trial is taking place at the federal courthouse in Manhattan, just a block from the state courthouse where Donald Trump is on trial.
New York Governor Kathy Hochle is set to travel across the pond WNYC's John Campbell reports.
The governor's first stop will be Italy and Vatican City on Wednesday and Thursday, where she'll participate in the Post-Climate Change Conference.
From there, the governor will head to Ireland for four days with stops in Dublin and Killarney,
where she'll speak at the Global Economic Summit.
The governor's trip comes on the heels of Mayor Adams' own trip to Italy.
She's slated to return to the U.S. on May 20th.
It's her second international trip since taking office.
She traveled to Israel in the days following the October 7th attack.
A new event series called Death of the Party is helping LGBTQ-plus young adults who are grieving
the laws of a parent who may or may not have accepted them. At a recent death of the party,
singer-songwriter Paris Bejato performed in honor of her late mother. Beato says she appreciates
the event for bringing together people who understand what she's going through.
It feels like you're in a room of people who know how to hold space for an experience like that
and not just hold space, but they understand. You can learn more about events at death of the party,
