Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Tuesday, May 2nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Chili start, 50, cloudy, chance of morning showers and upper 50s for a high today. Big Ugly isn't just a scathing insult in Albany that means lawmakers reached a final deal on New York's budget. Last night, lawmakers introduced a far-reaching, measure dubbed the big ugly, capping off months of negotiations around the state's $229 billion
Starting point is 00:00:39 fiscal plan. The measure lays out the intricacies surrounding rollbacks to New York's bail reform laws and the pilot program, that is, for free MTA buses. The plan also increases penalties for stores selling marijuana without a license. Mayor Eric Adams says New Yorkers should expect more busloads of migrants from Texas. WNYC's Aria Sundaram reports. The mayor offered scarce details on Monday, except to say Texas Governor Greg Abbott was once again dispatching buses of asylum seekers and sending them to New York and other northern cities. It's been months since New York received migrant buses from the border states. Still, migrants continued to arrive in large numbers. As of Sunday, nearly 60,000 had come through the city's shelter intake system, and over 36,000 were staying in city-run facilities.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Adams calls the Texas governor's actions morally bankrupt, and he continues to plead for federal intervention. More incentives are on the way to film projects in the Empire State for an industry already benefiting from hundreds of millions of dollars. The state budget deal in Albany includes $700 million a year in tax credits for those productions. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousin says the state needs to keep up with states like California and New Jersey. We continue to compete with California and everyone else to get our shows here, and they need a certain amount of vision about where they can be in the future. This year's film tax credit allocation is more than 60% bigger than the previous level. Critics of the tax break say it's far too generous.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Lawmakers began voting on the budget yesterday and planned to continue today. The devil scored four goals last night, shutting out the New York Rangers and games. Seven in Newark. Now they'll take on the Carolina Hurricanes who ousted the New York Islanders last week.
