Welcome to NYC Now.

It's Monday, May 6th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Soup kitchens and food pantries are decrying Mayor Adams' plan to reduce funding for emergency food services,
just as child hunger grows.
WNMIC's Karen Yee has more.
Food Rescue Group City Harvest says visits by
children and their families are increasing. Last year, double the amount of children and families
visited food pantries and had in 2019 before the pandemic. Food providers say demand continues to be high,
with rising food prices, the escalating cost of child care, and expiring federal pandemic aid programs.
Some are calling on Mayor Adams to stop his plan to decrease funding for emergency food services
to pre-pandemic levels by more than half. They say too many kids and families will have to be
turned away from fresh produce and hot meals. Food providers such as city harvest will
testify to City Council hearing later this morning to demand more money for the programs. Also,
Mayor Adams is facing criticism for the NYPD's deployment at college campuses across New York City
to crack down on protest over the Israel-Hamas war. The mayor has defended the move. He also continues
to blame, quote, outside agitators for escalations in some of the protests.
such as the occupation of Hamilton Hall at Columbia University last week that police later cleared,
Adams doubled down on that notion yesterday on ABC.
But when you're on college grounds and you do not attend that college,
you are an outsider, and then when you train people to do destructive things,
you are an agitator.
Columbia University officials say more than a quarter of the people arrested
when Hamilton Hall was cleared to have no affiliation with the school.
The New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers renewed their rivalry tonight at Madison Square Garden.
Hoops fans of a certain age will remember the legendary 90s Knicks battles with Pacer's sharpshooter, Reggie Miller,
immortalized by Spike Lee's constant banter with Miller, known as the Knicks Killer from the sidelines,
and Patrick Ewing's infamous missed layup tip all for game one of the NBA playoffs.
Second round is at 7.30 tonight.
On the ice, the New York Rangers won a nail-biter yesterday at the Garden.
They're up won nothing in their second round Stanley Cup playoff series
against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Game two is tomorrow at the Garden.
54 and cloudy right now on our way to a high of 73.
