Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. 59, clearing up out there right now, I can see some blue sky and still some clouds. Sunshine in 76 for a high on this Monday, May 8th. The Department of Buildings is issuing a partial vacate order on a New York City parking garage near Times Square. DLB officials say a nine-story commercial parking garage at 143 West 40th Street has missing structural steel supports, corrosion, a lack of power for lighting in part of the building, and a faulty drainage system.
Starting point is 00:00:47 The partial order affects the building's basement, along with three other levels. Structural engineers across the city are continuing a rigorous inspection frenzy after the collapse of a Manhattan parking garage last month. That incident killed the garage's long time. manager. Nonprofits contracted by the city to provide housing, child care, and other social services are demanding higher pay. The Human Services Council represents more than 170 nonprofits. It sent a letter to Mayor Adams demanding the city pays them on time so they can hold on to staff. Michelle Jackson is the council's executive director. Jackson says vulnerable children and families are at risk. The case managers who they meet can really be their saviors and they need to be trusted
Starting point is 00:01:30 people. And if you see turnover every six months, you're getting a new case manager. You're just not getting this in-quality service. A group called Sheltering Arms that served nearly 20,000 kids closed its doors this year after the city delayed millions of dollars in contract payments. Jackson says the mayor's preliminary budget promises no pay raises for the more than 80,000 people who work for non-profits under these city contracts. Starting point is 00:02:08 against the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL playoffs. They tallied a commanding 8 to 4 win against the hurricanes in Newark yesterday. After Carolina collected their own lopsided wins in games 1 and 2, the Devils saw seven different goal scores in Sunday's win. The team now trails two games to 1. The winner in the series will go on to face either. the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Florida Panthers for the Eastern Conference final. And that game four is Tuesday in Newark.
