Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Friday, August 22nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The City Health Department says a sixth person now has died in the Legioneer's disease outbreak in Central Harlem. That's the most Legioneer's deaths in the city since 16 died in an outbreak in the Bronx a decade ago. The number of those sickened by the disease also inched up from. From 109 to 111, 7 people remain in the hospital. City health officials say the outbreak is on the wane, though,
Starting point is 00:00:38 but that number of those stricken could still grow as people seek treatment, and earlier cases are confirmed as Legionaire's disease. The city says 12 water-cooling towers in Harlem that tested positive for the bacteria that caused Legionaires have since been cleaned. Brooklyn prosecutors are hunting for people throwing sex toys at WNBA Games. WNYC's Charles Lane reports on a recent arrest. The DA's office is looking for names after an Ohio man
Starting point is 00:01:08 through a green sex toy at a Liberty game, hitting a 12-year-old girl. 32-year-old Charles Burgess surrendered Wednesday and faces 10 charges, including felony assault with a weapon and obscenity. His lawyers say prosecutors want Burgess to help find others throwing objects in what he described as a fast-spreading phenomenon
Starting point is 00:01:28 at WNBA venues. News reports have linked the trend to a cryptocurrency publicity stunt. Usually women players are targeted. Burgess, who hails from Dayton, Ohio, pleaded not guilty, and was released until his trial. Immigration rights advocates are waiting to see if a rare workplace raid in Edison, New Jersey, is a sign of things to come. The mayor of Edison says immigration agents arrested 29 people in a warehouse raid. Stephen Yale-Layer is a retired professor of immigration law practice at Cornell Law School.
Starting point is 00:02:03 He says if the Trump administration wants to hit its goal of 3,000 daily arrest, it needs to go well beyond pursuing criminals. That's a very high number to achieve and going after immigrants, unauthorized immigrants working in companies known to hire a lot of immigrants could be one way to try to achieve that goal. The raid follows a similar action at a warehouse in Edison in July that ended with 20 arrests. Federal officials have not commented. 63 and clear, sunny and 82 for a high today.
