New York City tenants looking for a new apartment may want to wait a few days. As WNIC's David Brand reports, a new law banning most broker fees takes effect on Wednesday. The city's rental landscape is about to change. The new law will prohibit brokers from charging tenants. a fee unless the tenant actually hired them. In most cases, landlords will have to pay the broker
Starting point is 00:00:37 for listing an apartment and handling applications. There's one potential obstacle. The influential Real Estate Board of New York sued to block the law, and a judge has yet to issue a ruling. But the city's Consumer Protection Agency, individual brokers, and even the Real Estate Board are preparing for it to take effect this week. Mayor Eric Adams is calling for new legal tools to combat anti-Semitism. He signed an executive order yesterday that adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of anti-Semitism, already used by the federal government and dozens of states. We will never refuse the fight to stop the anti-Semitism we see in this city. And we will never tolerate hate in any form in our city. The mayor also introduced legislation
Starting point is 00:01:30 urging the city council to enshrine the definition in city law. Officials say Jewish New Yorkers make up about 11% of the city's population, but they're the targets of more than half of all hate crimes reported. Another stalwart of the free summer concert schedule is back. The Summer Thunder Series at Union Pool in Williamsburg returns this summer with free Sunday afternoon concerts that's starting later this month. Indy songwriter Frankie Cosmos will have Headlined the first show. This is on June 29th. A mix of genre-spanning artist, follow in July and August.
