Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Monday, May 5th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The number of car crashes in Manhattan's congestion zone has been going down for the past three years, but congestion pricing seems to be accelerating that trend. WMIC data reporter Joe Hong has more. Since congestion pricing launched on January 5th, the number of cars. crashes in the zone are down by about 13%. That's twice the drop between 2023 and 24.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Michael RepLogel is a former deputy commissioner for the city's Department of Transportation. He said fewer cars entering means less traffic, which reduces the frustration of drivers, which further contributes to a bit better driver behavior, which reduces crashes. According to a WNIC analysis, injuries for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists were down to their lowest point since the pandemic. Skywatchers, this is your week. WNYC's Tiffany Hansen has more. The Eta Aquarid's meteor shower peaks today with up to 30 meteors per hour blazing across the pre-dawn sky. They're fast and bright and our best seen outside of the city. It will be visible with the naked eye during the evening hours. Just look for a large, bright spot that might look like an airplane. And finally, later this month, Manhattan Henge returns May 28th and 29th. The setting sun perfectly aligns with the city's grid. Bronx Week is coming back to the borough starting today through May 18th, with dozens of free events celebrating the Burrell's culture.
