Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Tuesday, January 28th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Immigration arrest in New York and across the country may ramp up considerably under quotas put in place over the weekend.
WNIC's Arias Sunday Room reports.
Each U.S. immigration and customs enforcement field
office will be required to meet a daily quota of 75 arrests, the Washington Post reports.
That's a big leap up from the 24 daily immigration arrests made in New York City in 2023.
The Post said the quotas were handed down after President Trump complained that the number of
arrests made in his first week in office, about 2,700, were below his expectations.
A former ice worker told WNYC the quota will require a big boost in resources, including to expand
the number of detention beds.
There's a new candidate in the race for a New York City public advocate.
State Assembly member Jennifer Rashkumar says she's entering the contest after mounting a bid
for city controller this election cycle.
The public advocate serves as a watchdog of the mayoral administration and is second
in line of succession at City Hall.
Rajkumar represents parts of Queens including Glendale, Richmond Hill, and Woodhaven.
The race also includes incumbent and fellow Democrat Jamani Woodham.
Williams. While Williams has openly criticized Mayor Adams, Raj Kumar has been one of his closest
allies. The New York Jets have a new leadership team in place. New head coach Aaron Glenn
says gangrene is ready to bounce back from a disappointing season. Put your seat butts on and
get ready for the ride. Listen, there are going to be some challenges, but with challenges
becomes opportunity, gets opportunity. But here's what I do know. We're the freaking New York Jets.
So we're built for this.
Wow.
The Jets had Super Bowl aspirations last year,
but finished with five wins and 12 losses.
New general manager, Darren Mugi,
joined Glenn at the team's facility in Florin Park yesterday.
Glenn played eight seasons for the Jets.
He most recently served as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions
and was among the most sought-after candidates in this year's coaching market.
Moji heads to New York after serving as the general manager for the Denver
Broncos. Taking a look now at your forecast, 37 and partly cloudy skies. We do have a slight chance
