Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Tuesday, May 6th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The city's Consumer Protection Agency says it's investigating LSU, Brooklyn, after a WNIC report found scholarship students at the Rock Nation School of Music owed thousands of dollars in unexpected charges. WNIC's Ramsey-C-C-C-C-Lafee reports. At least a dozen students say they were awarded the Hope Scholarship that would allow them to graduate without debt at the JZ-backed music school in downtown Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Their debt ranged from $5,000 to $39,000. The university says the scholarship covered tuition only. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection now says they're investigating the school. A spokesperson says any students who feel they've been harmed by the Rock Nation School should contact the agency through 311. LSU did not respond to a request for comment on the investigation. The violent mawling of a chihuahua on the upper west side by two pit bulls is prompting calls for new laws to hold negligent canine owners criminally accountable. WNYC's Catalina Gonellas. Has more.
Starting point is 00:01:11 A 10-year-old service dog named Penny was attacked by two much larger dogs during a walk Saturday night. Her owner says the pit bull handlers stood by, did nothing, and then fled. City Council member Gail Brewer and State Assembly member Jennifer Rajkumar, say that under current law, dogs are treated as property. That means criminal charges are rarely brought in cases like this, even when the injuries are severe. Both lawmakers are looking into legislative solutions. Meanwhile, city health officials say they investigate serious bites
Starting point is 00:01:47 and may take enforcement action if a dog has a history of violence. The New York Knicks won game one of their series with the defending NBA champions last night. Yeah, you heard that right. the Knicks bested the Celtics last night in Boston and an overtime thriller, 108 to 105. For parts of the game, it looked as if Boston just outmatched the Knicks. But the Knicks erased a 20-point deficit at TD Garden. It's a best of seven series, a team that wins four games moves on to the next round.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Game two tomorrow night in Boston, the series shifts to New York on Saturday. Be careful if you're driving or even walking out there this morning. The National Weather Service says the fog will become so thick it will be hard to see beyond a quarter mile.
