Welcome to NYC now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Wednesday, June 25th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Zoran Mamdani is commanding a significant lead in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary.
The Western Queen's assembly member addressed supporters at a watch party last night in Long Island City just after midnight.
Eight months after launching this campaign.
with the vision of a city that every New Yorker could afford, we have won.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the race an hour and a half after the polls closed at nine,
but a ranked choice vote count will ultimately decide the outcome of this race,
since neither Democrat won a clear majority.
As of now, Mamdani will likely face Guardian Angels founder Curtis Lewa and Mayor Adams,
who is running as an independent in the general election,
and Cuomo has left the door open for,
an independent campaign come November. The heat is not the only thing to be on the lookout for
today. New York state officials say air quality will be compromised. WN.YC. Sean Carlson has more.
The Departments of Health and Environmental Conservation say ground-level ozone is the pollutants
of concern today. Ozone is a major component of smog and is produced through a chemical reaction
between sunlight and automobile and industrial emissions. Officials say anybody experiencing
symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing should consider consulting their
personal physicians. New Yorkers can also take steps to reduce pollution and conserve energy
by doing things like taking a carpool or mass transit instead of driving, using fans to
circulate air and reducing the use of major appliances like dishwashers, dryers, and water
heaters. New Jersey's biggest fair is going dark for the next two summers. The state fair
Meadowlands will return in 2027. That's because MetLife Stadium, with
the fair takes place, needs this space for the 2025 FIFA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the
26 World Cup. Fair organizers say the hiatus will give them time to reimagine the event and
bring it back bigger, better, and more family-friendly. The annual fair usually draws hundreds
of thousands of visitors with rides, games, food, and fireworks. 82 and sunny, so it's a warm one
already. We have a slim chance of late afternoon showers and thunderstorms on this Wednesday, sunny
with a high near 96, but feeling, of course, hotter than that. Tomorrow, we start to cool off
with a chance of showers, mostly cloudy than 78. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WMYC.
