Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Wednesday, March 5th.
Here's the morning headlines from Tiffany Hanson.
Mayor Eric Adams is heading to Washington, D.C. today to testify before Congress on New York City's sanctuary status.
Adams will appear beside mayors from Boston, Chicago, and Denver, which also have sanctuary.
city policies. The mayor's visit to the House of Representatives highlights his shifting relationship
with the White House. Department of Justice earlier ordered prosecutors to drop corruption charges
against Adams. That's because they say the charges are interfering with the mayor's ability to
cooperate with President Trump's immigration policies. The hearing starts at 10 this morning.
Governor Hockel says new tariffs on Mexico and Canada will harm New York State farmers. The governor
convened a roundtable with farmers at the state capital in all
yesterday. She says New York's farms export much of their product to other countries and the threat
of retaliatory tariffs could hurt their businesses. We have so many other enemies abroad,
starting with Russia, starting with Russia, and we're torturing and punishing our friends
in Canada and Mexico. God, the world's turned upside down. President Trump says the tariffs are
meant to force Canada and Mexico to stem the flow of illicit drugs and illegal
immigration over the border. The 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports took effect yesterday.
The MTA's newest open gangway trains are coming to the G line. It's the latest upgrade on the
only subway line that does not enter Manhattan. WNYC's Ramsey Caliphay has more.
I'm standing in the middle of an open gangway G train. To both my left and right, I can see
passengers two cars over. These trains don't have doors between the cars. Instead, there's an
accordion-style connector, like on some buses. Liz Longo is a regular rider on the G-line.
The time continuum with a different train look, I like it. It's refreshing to see people all the way
through. It's just, it's fun. Around 166,000 riders ride the G every day. Last year, the MTA
upgraded and cleaned 10 different stations on the line.
HBO is making a documentary about Flacco the owl. The film will tell the story of the Eurasian Eagle
Owl who escaped from the Central Park Zoo and stole the hearts of many New Yorkers.
Flaco died last February.
New Yorkers are invited to submit photos, videos, and stories about Flaco to the website,
flaco Documentary.com.
The forecast for today rain moving in, possibly a thunderstorm in the late afternoon,
it will be breezy with a high of 56.
Thanks for listening.
