Meanwhile, State Senator John Liu ...plans to endorse Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, for mayor. Plus, early voting begins Tuesday in New Jersey’s gubernatorial primary. This will be the first primary without the county line ballot format, and unaffiliated voters can register with a party at the polls.

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to NYC now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Monday, June 2nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. New York City has hit a major public safety milestone. WNYC is Catalina Goneller, exports. Mayor Eric Adams says New York City is seeing record low levels of gun violence. From January through May, the city recorded the fewest shootings and homicides. in any five-month period on record.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Officials say there were 264 shootings and 112 homicides, just barely below the previous low set in 2018 and 2017. Adams credits what he calls precision policing and the removal of more than 22,000 illegal guns since he took office. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the NYPD's summer crime fighting strategy will be, quote, bold and aggressive to keep those numbers down. Zoran Mamdani is set to get a key endorsement as candidates for New York City mayor, Vive for Asian-American votes. WNIC's Elizabeth Kim has the exclusive report.
Starting point is 00:01:12 State Senator John Liu is a political trailblazer. He became the first Asian American elected to a citywide office when he served as controller. Today, he's endorsing Mandani, a Democratic socialist for mayor. Like Liu, Mamdani doesn't want to change the standardized test for admission. to the city's prestigious specialized high schools. Polls show a tightening two-person race in the Democratic primary between Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo, a moderate, has the support of Brooklyn City Council member Susan Zwang.
Starting point is 00:01:46 She recently wrote an op-ed making the case for Cuomo's experience and track record responding to Asian-American concerns. Early voting starts tomorrow for New Jersey's primary race for governor. There are six Democrats and five Republicans running. Voters who are not yet affiliated with the party can register with one at the polls to vote during early voting or on election day, June 10th. The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is tomorrow. This is the first primary in New Jersey held without the county line ballot design. County voting officials have begun mailing sample ballots so voters can get familiar with that new design.
