Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Wednesday, May 14th. Here's the morning headlines from David First. The attorneys general for New York and New Jersey are suing the Department of Homeland Security. They say the federal government is trying to withhold disaster relief funding from states that don't cooperate with the Trump administration's immigration agenda. WNYC's Julia Hayward reports. A total of 20 attorneys general are part of the federal lawsuit. They say the move puts lives at risk and violates the Constitution by using federal funds as leverage.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Programs supporting flood response, search and rescue, and even security at religious institutions could be affected. In announcing the suit, New York State AG Letitia James called the administration's immigration policies, quote, illegal and chaotic. The Trump administration has not yet responded to the lawsuit. Police say a domestic violence call in Brownsville, Brooklyn, turned deadly yesterday after a 25-year-old man allegedly confronted NYPD officers with a knife. NYPD chief of housing, Charles McAvoy, says officers were called to a domestic dispute at the Glenmore Housing Development. Our officers were confronted with a dangerous and difficult situation and took decisive action to protect a mother and her children. The man was shot and killed after a taser failed to stop him. Officials say the women and children were unharmed.
Starting point is 00:01:34 The shooting is under review by the NYPD's Force Investigation Division. New York City is getting a new office to combat anti-Semitism. Mayor Adams announced the move yesterday, citing a rise in anti-Jewish hate incidents. Adams called the initiative, quote, the first of its kind. This administration would not remain silent while our Jewish brothers and sisters are targeted with hate. The office is supposed to make sure city agencies don't permit
Starting point is 00:02:03 anti-Semitism and advise on legislation needed to address the issue. The NYPD says anti-Jewish incidents accounted for 62% of all hate crimes in the city in the first quarter of 2025. The Knicks are in Boston tonight looking to advance to the next round of the NBA playoffs.
