Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Thursday, January 2nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The NYPD's investigating after two men were stabbed and hurt in separate incidents on the subway yesterday. WNYC's Andrew Jambroney reports the incidents come amid heightened concerns about safety in the transit system. Police say the stabbings happened in Manhattan, within a half hour of each other. The first was on the platform of the one-lines 110th Street
Starting point is 00:00:36 station. The second occurred on a two-train near 14th Street. They come a day after a man was pushed onto the tracks at a Chelsea station as a train approached. He was wounded but survived, and police arrested in charge a 23-year-old man with attempted murder in the case. The NYPD says transit crime is down 5% since last year, but Mayor Eric Adams and other officials acknowledged that recent assaults have left some commuters on edge. Police have not reported any arrest in either of the incidents. The New York City's mayor-old primary is six months away, WNYC's Litzer, but Kim explains how New Yorkers can start weighing the candidates right now. There are at least seven candidates trying to unseat Mayor Adams in the Democratic primary.

Police are investigating after a late-night mass shooting outside a private event space yesterday in Queens. It sent 10 people to the hospital.
Starting point is 00:02:02 The NYPD says the shooting happened just after 11 when a group of four men opened fire on a line that had formed outside the venue. They fired around 30 rounds into the crowd. Officials say all the people shot sustained non-life-threatening injuries miraculously and are expected to recover. police say the victims are 16 to 20 years old. The shooting happened outside a building that hosts several different venues and private event spaces.
