Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Wednesday, September 10th.
Here's your morning headlines from Michael Hill.
In the news this morning, the Port Authority says it's suspending path service between Harrison and Journal Square this weekend for repairs.
WNYC's Julia Haywood reports.
It's the first of six weekends this fall thought the Port Authority will pause,
trains to replace four switches and upgrade infrastructure.
The agency says the work will make the system more flexible and efficient.
The disruption comes after the Hoboken Station reopened.
That stop had been closed through Labor Day after newly installed equipment failed repeatedly,
even causing a derailment.
Free wheelchair accessible shuttle buses will connect Harrison, Journal Square, and Newark
Penn Station every 7 to 12 minutes.
That slows down a bit overnight.
Service resumes Monday morning at 5.
Weekday service won't be affected.
The NYPD says they're looking for a man named Jamel McGriff in connection with two deaths, robbery, and arson, and Queens.
Police say McGriff claimed to be looking for a place to charge his phone.
Police say a couple in their 70s named Frank and Marine Alton led him in their house in Bellrose.
Hours later first responders found both of them dead in the house on five.
There, officials say McGriff has a lengthy criminal history and was out on parole at the time of the alleged crimes.
Hoboken is under a boil water advisory this morning.
City officials say two water mains broke.
One is at the corner of Garden in Newark Streets.
They say repairs are underway, but residents with working water service should boil it for at least a minute,
even if their H2O is filtered at home.
Greenpoint residents are complaining about air quality issues from a pavement recycling facility
in Long Island City, green asphalt produces 100,000 tons of pavement for the New York region.
At least 30 percent of the city's asphalt is recycled, while the practice cuts carbon and climate emissions.
Some local residents say the burning tire smell coming from the plan causes coughing and breathing
difficulties. Elected officials are hosting a town hall meeting on the matter on September 16th.
That's next Tuesday.
On cloudy now, chance of showers by 11 this morning.
Cloud high near 70 with some winds up to 19 miles an hour.
Thanks for listening.
