Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Tuesday, February 4th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
A new Sienna College poll says the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers support a plan to put two NYPD officers on every overnight train for the next six months.
The plan was put forward by Governor Hokel.
She wants to fund the overtime the extra patrols would cost with $77 million in state tax dollars,
which would be matched by another $77 million from the city.
She says she hopes to extend the funding into the future.
Support for the plan cuts across party in other lines, according to the Sienna poll,
and was especially favored by those living in the suburbs and older New Yorkers.
New York State will allow doctors to prescribe abortion medication,
anonymously. WNIC's John Campbell reports on the new legislation.
Governor Hokel signed the bill into law just days after Louisiana authorities
charged a Hudson Valley doctor under the state's criminal abortion law last week.
Dr. Margaret Carpenter is accused of prescribing abortion medication online to a Louisiana resident.
There's a doctor right now who lives not far from we are sitting here who's not sure what her
future is all about in terms of is she going to be safe from this.
I want to assure her as her governor, I will protect her.
The new law will allow doctors to prescribe abortion medication without having to put their name on the bottle.
But they'll still have to list their health clinics address.
Hokel says she's open to more changes to protect abortion doctors in the future.
New York State is cracking down on drunk driving ahead of the Super Bowl this weekend.
W&C Sean Carlson has details.
Governor Kathy Hokel says state and local police are increasing patrols and running more sobriety
checkpoints through Sunday. It'll also target underage drinking. The governor's office is reminding
residents to plan ahead and have option to get home safely if you plan on drinking. If you see a
friend who is too drunk to drive, take their keys and have a sober friend get them home. If you
serve a guest alcohol and he or she gets in a crash that night, you could be held liable.
The governor's office says during last year's Super Bowl campaign, law enforcement arrested more
than 260 people and issued more than 8,000 tickets.
