Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Monday, June 30th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
The city's rent guidelines board is voting tonight on just how much landlords can raise rents
in about a million stabilized apartments.
The board is considering an increase of 1.75 to 4.75% on new one-year leases
and up to 7.75% on two-year leases.
It's holding the annual vote in East Harlem at 7 at El Muccio de Barrio.
The meeting is live streaming on the YouTube channel of the Rent Guidelines Board.
New mental health clubhouses are springing up around New York City.
They're in the market for new members.
WNIC's Caroline Lewis reports.
About a dozen clubhouses citywide have either recently opened or are in the process of expanding.
These community centers are designed to reduce social isolation for people with serious mental illnesses
while connecting them with employment and social services.
The City Health Department boosted annual funding for clubhouses to $30 million last year
and set a goal of tripling membership to 15,000 people.
But it remains to be seen whether clubhouses can meet that ambitious goal.
Many are doing outreach at community events and seeking referrals from other organizations,
while getting new spaces up and running.
Police are investigating after two teenage girls were shot near the historic Stonewall Inn
just hours after the New York City Pride Parade.
The NYPD says they responded to multiple reports of a shooting around the corner
from the storied gay bar just after 10 at night yesterday.
Officers found two teenagers, they say, on the scene with serious injuries.
A 16-year-old girl was shot in the head and transported to a hospital
in critical condition. Another teen, 17 years old, was shot in the leg. She's in stable condition
at a local hospital. Police say there have been no reports of arrest so far this morning.
The air quality is moderate today due to both ozone and particle pollution. There are some
weed and some grass pollen in the area. Here's that Monday forecast. 73 and partly sunny now.
Partly sunny and 87 for a high today, so it's going to feel warm, probably even hot again, but
the calm wind. And then tonight, 50-50 chance of showers and storms, mainly after 8 o'clock
and a low temperature. We don't cool off all that much, low of 75. And then tomorrow afternoon showers
and thunderstorms likely, mostly cloudy, 87 again, winds gusting up to 21 miles an hour.
