It's Thursday, August 7th. Here's the morning headlines from David First.
Two men arrested in connection with the shooting of an off-duty customs and border protection officer now face state charges.
Miguel Mora and Christiane Ibar have been indicted on robbery, assault, and weapons possession charges.
Mora was also charged with attempted murder.
Federal officials say the men are both from the Dominican Republic and entered the country illegally.
Homeland Security Special Agent in charge, Ricky Patel, says they disrespected American rule of law.
I'm going to be frank. These two individuals should not have been in our country. They should not, and now will not, continue to do harm in our communities.
Days after the shooting, the Department of Justice sued New York City over its sanctuary policies. Both men have not yet been a
arraigned and their attorney information is not immediately available. New York City mayoral candidates
are trading attacks over policing after last week's mass shooting in Midtown. WNYC's Elizabeth Kim reports
on how one of the victim's families is distancing itself from the tragedy's politics.
Slain NYPD officer did a rule Islam's parents, sisters, and two young sons gathered solemnly
before reporters inside their Bronx home on Tuesday night. Islam's
brother-in-law, Zamilar Ruman, delivered the family's first public remarks since the
incident. He says the family wants to express gratitude to everyone who reached out to them.

Islam's wife didn't join the family. She's eight months pregnant and expecting the couple's
third son later this month. New York State economic officials say there's a reason there
waiving millions of dollars and penalties against a developer that failed to meet an affordable
housing deadline at Brooklyn's Atlantic Yards. Empire State Development Vice President Joel Colkman
says the company Greenland Holdings threatened to sue them. They have expressed that there's
unoiled delays that prevented that from meeting the affordable housing deadline. They have expressed
that should we seek the collection, there would be litigation. Greenland was supposed to build the
housing by May under a 2014 legal agreement or face millions in monthly fines. But it hasn't even
started. The company did not immediately respond to request for comment. Taking a look at the weather,
