Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Monday, November 18th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Defense attorneys for the former Marine accused of choking and killing another man on the subway
will start presenting their case today.
WNYC, Samantha Max, has the latest on Daniel Penny's criminal trial.
Daniel Penny held Jordan Neely in a chokehold for about 6,000.
minutes on an Uptown F train last year. He said he was trying to restrain Neely because Neely was
yelling threats and passengers were scared. Prosecutors say Penny was reckless and went too far.
Penny has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges.
For the last couple weeks, prosecutors have been questioning people who are on the train,
police, Penny's former martial arts instructor and a medical examiner. Now, it's the
fence sites turn. They're expected to question at least one expert witness. Penny could also take
the stand. A new public space is opening today at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge near Chinatown.
The fences are coming down around a new section of the archers that support the bridge. The Department
of Transportation says it's the later step in a project to reopen a large area that had been closed for
more than a decade. Commissioner Edanus Rodriguez says the space will give people a new
new area to enjoy lunch or coffee or with a great view.
We are returning another part of the arches to the community.
For low in Manhattan and Chinatown, even as small public spaces are precious.
There are plenty of benches and trees in the space, and the Transportation Department
is hoping for more closed-off sections in the area in the coming years.
The park is open from dusk till dawn.
It's between Road Street and Park Row.
The New York City Council will vote today to make November 30th Shirley Chisholm Day in New York City.
Council members seek to honor the Brooklyn-born Trailblazer.
Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and the first to seek a major party's presidential nomination in 1972.
Chisholm was a passionate advocate for equitable educational and economic opportunities, especially for women and communities of color.
This year marked what would have been Shirley Chisholm's 100.
birthday. Fifty-one in clear right now, still with an elevated risk of fire spreading. Sunshine and 65
in gusty. Tomorrow's sunny near 60. Wednesday, sunshine, new 60. Then Wednesday night, a really good
chance for rain. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WNYC. Be sure to catch us every weekday,
