The NYPD says a unhoused man stabbed and kills three people with a pair of kitchen knives in a morning spree of violence that span more than 20 blocks to Manhattan. Police arrested the man. Mayor Adam says the man suffers
Starting point is 00:00:32 from mental health issues. It is a clear, clear example of the criminal justice system, mental health system that continues to fail New Yorkers. Authorities identify the man as 51-year-old Ramon Rivera and charged him with three murders. His attorney information was not immediately available. Adams and officials say Rivera has eight arrests and was recently sentenced. Police say his next court date is next month. Daniel Penny's defense attorney is questioning whether his client's chokehold was really the thing that killed Jordan Neely on the F train last year.
Starting point is 00:01:10 WNYC, Samantha Max, has this dispatch from court. Medical examiner Cynthia Harris says Neely died from the chokehold Penny placed him in. Penny now stands trial on manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges. But during a cross-examination that spanned two days, Penny's defense attorney asked Harris whether Neely could have died from other causes, like a drug overdose or a genetic defect. Neely's defense lawyer repeatedly asked the medical examiner to explain how she could know the amount of force Penny was using at any given moment. But over and over, Harris maintained that the chokehold was the most probable cause of Neely's death. A new report from the Robin Hood Foundation
Starting point is 00:01:56 in Columbia University shows that a growing portion of the New Yorkers who pick up free groceries at food pantries have jobs or have worked recently. Advocates fighting hunger say it's yet another sign that wages are not keeping up with the cost of living in the big city. Many food pantry users are also on SNAP benefits, formerly called food stamps, but the share of pantry users enrolled in that benefit is also shrinking. Researchers say that may be because of their immigration status or because they don't meet the income limits. 49 and clear right now, sunny and 58. That's the high for today.
