Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Monday, November 4th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Immigration is a key issue in both the presidential election and races in and around New York City.
Natalie Rubio Toroio is with the Queens-based nonprofit voices Latinas.
She says a great deal is at stake for the tens of thousands of.
of migrants in the boroughs.
It's a very important election because what's been put in place to help these people
apply for work authorization, apply for asylum, just to get a chance to stay legally in the
country and work for themselves and support themselves is at risk.
Ruby O'Te O'Torio says surveys of Latino and Asian-American voters indicate that both skew
heavily to Democrat Kamala Harris. Republican Donald Trump has promised to launch the largest
deportation operation in the history of our country. That's a direct quote.
Harris has also promised to strengthen border security. The U.S. Justice Department says it will
monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in 27 states and 86 jurisdictions on election
day. This includes Bergen, Middlesex, and Union counties in New Jersey, and Queens in New York.
The Department of Civil Rights Division regularly monitors elections for
voter intimidation and voter suppression.
Tomorrow's vote comes amid heightened concern about election meddling.
The Washington Post reports that in 2022, federal monitors visited 64 jurisdictions in 24 states,
that's up from 44 percent from 2020.
Manhattan's Elizabeth Street Garden has a new lease on life.
The Soho Green Space was scheduled for eviction last month,
but organizers say a judge put that plan on pause,
until their legal appeal moves forward. The garden has been embroiled in a legal battle with the
city of New York for years now. The city owns the space and wants to use it as a site to build
affordable housing for seniors, but advocates argue that there are plenty of other places for the
development. Supporters of the Elizabeth Street Garden now say their case is scheduled for a day
in court in February of 2025. Forty-eight with some clouds out there, it's chilly and kind of brisk, too.
Partly sunny and near 60 for a high today.
And then tonight, mid-50s, so we do cool off.
And then Election Day tomorrow, partly sunny and 71 as we have now,
what seems to be this typical mid-week warm-up.
It'll be gusty as well.
Even warmer on Wednesday, mostly sunny and up near 80 once again and gusty.
Then on Thursday, we start to cool off.
Thanks for listening.
