Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Tuesday, November 7th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The National Park Service expects the Statue of Liberty to be open for business as usual today. Yesterday, protesters demanding a ceasefire to the Israel-Hamas war closed down the monument. WNIC politics reporter Julia Hayward has more. At the foot of the statue, hundreds of protesters unfurled signs saying,
Starting point is 00:00:36 Not in our name and ceasefire now. They were with the group, Jewish Voice for Peace. Organizer Jay Saper invoked the poem at the base of Lady Liberty. They compel us those words to take action to support the Palestinians in Gaza yearning to breathe free. National Park Police ordered the protesters to leave the island. entry to the monument was temporarily closed. The same group staged a similar protest at Grand Central Terminal over a week ago that disrupted commutes during rush hour.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Authorities did not immediately say if there were any arrest. Organizers say they'd only been issued citations. It's Election Day across New York. WNIC's Bridget Bergen reports on what voters can expect at the polls. Voters across New York City will elect all 51 members of the city Council, along with district attorneys in the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. There are also about two dozen judicial contests and two statewide ballot questions. Turnout during early voting was light, just shy of 86,000 voters turned out. Five times as many people cast a ballot during
Starting point is 00:01:49 early voting last year. But there are still some races to watch, including South Brooklyn's 47th district, where two incumbents, Ari Kagan and Justin Brannon, are going head to head. voters will also elect a new representative to an open seat in nearby District 43, where Susan Zwang, Yantang, and Vito LaBella are all on the ballot. Polls closed at 9 tonight. Paul's Irland, New Jersey from 6th this morning all the way until 8 o'clock tonight. Multiple reports say the New York Mets are hiring Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza to lead the team. Mendoza spent the past four years in the Bronx working under Yankees manager Aaron.
