Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Thursday, November 7th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
A study from John J. College of Criminal Justice indicates nearly a quarter of NYPD officers
are looking to leave the department as soon as possible.
WNYC's Brittany Craigstein has more.
Nearly 2,000 officers took the survey.
The 23% who say they want to quit cite things like frustration with the condition of their equipment and facilities.
But Kenneth Quick, a professor at DeSales University who worked on the study, says one of the other biggest factors is something a lot of people are familiar with, poor work-life balance.
I think a lot of officers are at what they perceive to be the whim of management, just being forced to work these work.
long hours to fill basic organizational needs.
The NYPD is at its lowest staffing levels in decades, down about 3,000 members since 2020.
The NYPD did not immediately comment on the study.
New York police say they arrested a man for that murder in a bedstay subway station two months ago.
They say 57-year-old Donald Haywood shot a man in the head near a metro card vending machine at the
Rockaway Avenue station.
Haywood faces charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police say a motive for the murder remains unclear.
They say Hayward killed 47-year-old Freddie Weston,
the fifth person shot and killed in the subway system this year.
Post-election protests have begun a day after Donald Trump secured a second term
as president of these United States.
Protesters took to the streets last night in downtown Brooklyn.
Demonstrators gathered at Cadman Plaza Park for a rally that NYU
students for Democratic Society organized. Hazel Grinberg of Socialists. Alternatives says she sees
Tuesday's result as an opportunity. As, yeah, as disappointed as I am, I'm not totally surprised that
we ended up in this position, and it's really spurring me to continue to be organized and try to
draw my people into organizing. The demonstration followed Republican wins across the country.
Though Democrats secured some key victories in New York, Trump's win raised his questions about the
political landscape, local leaders are quickly preparing for its possible effects in New York
City. Sixty-six and mostly clear now, mostly sunny today and not very fall-like. 76 and
breezy again. And then tomorrow's sunny and 67. We're getting closer. Saturday, sunny and 56,
