Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
The NYPD is trumpeting a drop in overall crime, shootings and transit crimes through its latest crime data.
But some experts say the bigger picture is more complicated.
WNYC's Charles Lane explains.
NYPD officials say overall there was a steep drop in crime if you compare the
this October with the same month last year. But some experts say that's a narrow way to look at it.
They say felony assaults are at their highest level in 25 years and may lead some people to feel
unsafe. Greg Unbock is an assistant professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
So you have this very large number of felonious assault plus more total counts of all violations
than we've ever seen. Collectively, that can lead to a sense of disorder.
Police stats do show that shootings and subway crimes are down.
Mayor Adams says he spoke with President-elect Trump on Wednesday.
It's the first conversation Adams has revealed the two men have had since the election.
There are many issues here in the city that we want to work together with the administration to address.
The mayor cited infrastructure as one of the topics they discussed but declined to disclose any further details.
Mayor Adams says the city would fight to protect.
immigrants among other communities that could be affected by a Trump administration.
Trump has promised to deport undocumented immigrants in mass once he enters office in January.
New York City remains under a drought watch. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker says that
means New Yorkers should use extra caution when they're out in city parks.
