Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Thursday, October 10th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
The New York City Council is probing the sheriff's office over alleged cash seizures at unlicensed cannabis shops.
W.M.M.C. Charles Lane explains.
Council members, Gail Brewer and Justin Brannan,
requested records on asset forfeiture account totals,
correspondence with landlords and cannabis enforcement tallies.
The request comes after Sheriff Anthony Miranda testified before the council saying he didn't
believe his office seized cash from illegal smoke shops.
Others contradicted him in opposing testimony, and a large amount of unvouchered cash was
seized last month from the sheriff's office.
Miranda says he, quote, learned of this cash and alerted city investigators.
Lawyers for the smoke shops estimate that more than $2 million,
has been seized from their clients during the inspections.
They filed a lawsuit attempting to overturn the law,
giving Miranda's office authority to close unlicensed cannabis shops.
New York City Hall says it plans to respond to a request for information in the coming days.
Gun dealers soon must post tobacco-style warning messages in their stores in the Empire State.
That's the result of a new bill.
New York Governor Kathy Hokel signed into law yesterday.
it's one of six gun control bills the governor signed.
She says they set an example.
They'll make us safer without a doubt.
But isn't it a shame that the rest of the nation
can't be just as safe as we are here in the state of New York?
The new messages in gun stores will make clear
that firearms increase the risk of suicide and unintentional death.
The stores will have to post them in a prominent space
and provide the warning to buyers at the time of sale.
This law takes effect in 90 days.
A magical moment last night,
one of the greatest in Mets history at City Field.
Shortstop, Francisco Lindur
cracked a basis-loaded home run,
a grand slam in the sixth inning.
The Mets won the game 4-1 and the series.
Next stop for the Amazins,
the National League Championship Series,
against either the L.A. Dodgers or San Diego Padres,
to decide who goes on to the war.
World Series. Meanwhile, the Yankees won game three of their series against the Kansas City
Royals last night, three to two, putting the series that went away from advancing in the American
League. They play again tonight in Kansas City at 8 o'clock. Sunny in just 61 for a high today.
That win from the Northwest, making it gusty and keeping it cool. Then tomorrow's sunny and near 70.
