It's Wednesday, October 11th.
Here's the morning headlines from Kerry Nolan.
Governor Hokel is throwing her support behind Israel after the weekend's devastating Hamas attack on Israeli soil.
Speaking at a rally last night, the governor said New Yorkers can do their part.
by reaching into their wallets.
We must reach deep into our pockets because there are those who live far away.
But we are united as one family because New York and Israel will always stand together.
And they need our help now.
So be generous.
Hockel directed flags on state buildings to be flown at half staff indefinitely starting today
in remembrance of the lives lost as a result of the attacks.
New York State added 29 names to the fallen firefighters.
Memorial Wall in Albany yesterday, WNYC's John Campbell reports nearly half of them died of 9-11 related illnesses.
Each year, the state adds the name of those who died in the line of duty to a 54-foot wall just outside the state capital.
This year, 14 of those firefighters served at the World Trade Center site in the wake of the 9-11 attacks.
Governor Hockel thanked their families for their service.
All these people are extraordinary people who said, I will do this.
I'll do this. I will be willing to go into harm's way to protect people I may never ever see.
The state fire administrator says the number of firefighters who died of 9-11 illnesses is equal to the number who died on the day of the attack.
Top police officials in Patterson, New Jersey, are suing the state's attorney general for taking over that city's police department.
New Jersey's third largest police department has been under state supervision since this past March.
A month after city police shot and killed crisis interventionist Naji Seabrooks in a standoff.
Department leaders, including the city's acting public safety director and police chief,
claim the AG's office is ignoring legal limitations set by state law.
They want local control restored to the department.
Attorney General Matt Plattkin's office says the suit is meritless,
and the state's ability to supersede local law enforcement is well established.
We will see mostly sunny skies today with highs in the upper 60s, mostly clear tonight with lows in the lower 50s.
Right now it's 57 degrees under mostly clear skies in New York City.
