Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Friday, October 13th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Police are patrolling near Jewish and Muslim religious sites this week. WNYC's Baha Ostodon visited several mosques in Brooklyn. Imams and rabbis say they're grateful for the extra security after seeing police officers parked outside synagogues and mosques all over.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Brooklyn. Umer Ahmed was at the Muslim Community Center mosque in Sunset Park. He was getting ready for Friday's pro-Palestinian protest in Times Square. Any form of slaughtering or any form of bloodshed irrespective of your race or religion is something that God has not allowed in any religion. Ahmed has been a chaplain there for seven years. He says about 150 of his members, as young as 13 will join the rally to speak the truth about conditions in Gaza, which he says are misrepresented in news media. Outrage over migrants living in Staten Island has some local politicians talking about secession from New York City.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Staten Island borough president, Vito Fasela, says he's preparing to launch a new study on how to create a city of Staten Island and follows a similar proposal from councilmember Joe Borrelli. There's a wild notion that Staten Island would be. be unable to do the things that every other municipality does, whereas every municipality, not called New York City, somehow manages to build roads and put out fires and cut the grass in the park. Secession could mean a new Staten Island police force, public school system, and local government. The city council and mayor would have to initiate such a move before getting approval in Albany.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Today is the last day. You can order a free curbside composting bin for your Brooklyn building. The city expanded its compost pickup across Brooklyn this month. After expanding to all of Queens last year, you can order a composting bin through the Department of Sanitation's website. Residents can also put their compost in any bin with the lid as long as it's no larger than 55 gallons. To store food scraps at home, you can keep them in a container in the freezer or in a closed container on your kitchen countertop. The City Council this year passed a bill to require all residents' compost. their organic waste by spring of 2025. Mid-50s now and mostly clear.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Today, Friday the 13th, sunny and 64 for high with a slight breeze out there. Tomorrow look for some rain. Afternoon rain likely cloudy in 56. And then Sunday's slim chance of morning rain turning mostly sunny and 60. So pretty good looking weekend overall. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WNYC.
