Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Tuesday, October 17th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Migrant families with kids may stay up to 60 days in New York City shelters. WNYC's Karen Ye reports a Mayor Adams' most drastic step to limit emergency housing for new arrivals. The city says it will start notifying migrant families with children that they have 60 days to look for new housing or reapply for shelter.
Starting point is 00:00:35 The policy change would affect about 13,000 families currently housed by the city. It's the latest attempt by Mayor Adams to cut back services for the 60,000 migrants in the city's care. Advocates say the plan will disrupt the lives of migrant students and put families on the street as winter approaches. The city says a new semi-congregate shelter for families will also open at Floyd Bennett Field in the coming weeks. That location will have privacy dividers and accommodate about 500 families with kids. CUNY will waive its freshman application fees for every public and private school student in New York State for the rest of the month. It's part of Governor Kathy Hokel's recently announced initiative to simplify the college application process for

The CUNY system already waives application fees for eligible city public school students, including applicants experiencing homelessness who live in public housing and students whose families receive other forms of public assistance. For more information, you can go to cune.edu slash learn more. The last details of Saturday's Tompkins Square Halloween dog parade roof for being rined out days before the event. This Saturday, lead organizer Joseph Bordewan, says this year participants will walk a route on the street on Avenue B adjacent to the park.
Starting point is 00:01:56 600 wristbands will be given out for human companions and a first-come first-served basis. I just hope everyone understands all of the obstacles we had to deal with this year to put something together. And even with all those obstacles, I still feel like we are going to have an amazing parade on the streets of the city. Those hoping to participate should pick up wristbands on Avenue B in 13th Street at noon. The parade starts at 1 p.m. with the first bark. 52 in Park Lake Cloudy. Slim chance of showers today are high of 62 under partly sunny skies.
