Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Friday, October 18th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. A new report finds New York City's multi-billion dollar shelter system for homeless residents beset with potential self-dealing, nepotism, and excessive salaries for non-profit executives. WNIC's Andrew Jim Brony has more. The Department of Investigation for,
Starting point is 00:00:36 found risks of taxpayer dollars being misused and more than 50 nonprofits that provide shelter and other services. In some cases, nonprofit insiders were paid outside of their normal compensation through personal business interests involving the shelter where they worked, for example, security companies that staffed those shelters. In other cases, investigators found the nonprofits employed family members of their senior employees or board members, possibly violating conflict of interest rules. The city's Department of Homeless Services says it stopped doing business with certain contractors in the report, and taking other steps to improve accountability.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Some parents say a new GPS tracker for New York City school buses is off to a bumpy start. The app launched in January, but so far, only 13% of families have logged on, and some of those families say they've run into glitches. Lori Podvesker is a director at Include NYC, which works with students with disabilities. She says families who don't speak English
Starting point is 00:01:30 have trouble navigating the app, and too often bus drivers fail to turn it on. In 2024, there is no reason for parents to not know where their kids are. Education Department officials say the agency is working to expand and improve the GPS service. Forged wire notices, bogus closing records, and lies on top of lies. Assault County DA says a real estate attorney from Garden City, Long Island, used all three of those to embezzle nearly $6 million from clients. Yes, sir, Daniel Boldy pleaded guilty to grand larceny and other charges in the thefts tied to 46 real estate deals.
Starting point is 00:02:14 D.A. Ann Donnelly says the elaborate scheme was carried out between September 2020 and January of this year. Bondi is expected to face a restitution order and a prison sentence. He's also expected to lose his law license. He's due back in court in April. 50 and clear for the Coastal Flood Advisory from 7 this morning. until 11 this morning for northern New Jersey and Manhattan.
