Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Thursday, October 26th. Here's the morning headlines from David First. Pro-Palestinian college students across New York City walked out of their classes yesterday in protest of the Israel-Hamas War. Hundreds gathered outside of Columbia's low memorial library around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, some of whom walked out of class.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Other supportive of the Palestinian cause, like student Katie McCarthy, joined later on. They just want peace in the Middle East, as well as kind of ending this apartheid with Israel, which I think has been going on for far too long. About a dozen protesters gathered alongside the Columbia demonstrations waving Israeli flags. A separate pro-Israeli demonstration began on campus later yesterday, but the walkout was peaceful beyond some heckling. Other pro-Palestinian walkouts were scheduled across CUNY yesterday and at private colleges like NYU, Cooper Union, and the new school. Some legal service providers say New York City's new policies limiting shelter stays for migrants could complicate their work permit applications.

Nonprofits are rushing to get migrants from Venezuela signed up for temporary protected status, a federal designation that will allow about 50,000. 15,000 Venezuelans in the city the right to temporarily live and work in the United States. But some attorneys say the city's rules to evict thousands of migrants after 30 or 60 days from emergency shelters means some migrants might not have a fixed address to get their mail and their approved work permits. Migrants who have to relocate while they wait for their permits will have to file more paperwork and submit a change of address form every time they move or reapply for shelter.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Prospect Park is welcoming visitors to a new trail in an area that has been closed for restoration since the 90s. Prospect Park Alliance President Morgan Monaco says offense never kept teens away from the closed-off fall-kill waterfall anyway. It's been a destination for young people to hang out, to do graffiti, other activities. And so we decided, fairly recently, that if we can't beat them, let's join them. The area is now open, but the water isn't falling just. just yet. Park workers turned the waterfall off due to recent heavy rains. It's unclear when it will be back. 60 degrees now. Mostly sunny skies expected today with a high near 75 this afternoon. Tomorrow, again, mostly sunny with a high near 75.
